Computer issues

Log in as yourself.

Check availability of disks with df -k. All data should be collected to your own subdirectory in one of the following locations:

/rax51/scratch

/rax52/scratch

Each of these partitions holds 4.1 Gb. Each data file is 18.0 Mb, or about 6 Mb when compressed. You should start data collection with an empty partition; ask previous users to delete their data frames.

First time users--change to the /rax50/raxis/raxis6.2/control/code directory, and create new parameter files for yourself,

cp PHI_OSC.raxis PHI_OSC.<yourname>

cp PHI_STL.raxis PHI_STL.<yourname>

cp header.raxis header.<yourname>

Type source /rax50/raxis/.login

Change directory to your frame directory (cd /rax5?/scratch/yourname) and type start &

Verify the detector with the Initialize:Execute menu item

Set defaults for Environment:Realtime display.

One little quirk about the software: to enter a new value in a dialog box you have to delete the old value first.

To display your frames with the Raxis frame viewer, type display &

For denzo, execute the following command:

prepare denzo

Our web page has more details on denzo: http://msg.ucsf.edu/local/programs/denzo/denzo.html. A hard copy manual is available--see Chris Waddling.

Instructions for backing up data are posted, and are available on the web at http://msg.ucsf.edu/local/XRayLab/tapebackup.html.

As a courtesy to the next user, backup & delete your frames within 10 days. After that, frames will be deleted by an automated script!!!

Hardware issues

Helium must be supplied to the mirrors. The second stage of the tank regulator must read 5 psi, and the in-line flow controller should be set to "Slow purge" level 65. Change to a new tank when the first regulator drops below 500 psi, and notify Chris so a new tank can be ordered.

Nickel filter wheel: set to between 0.0006" and 0.001" for protein data collection.

Beam stop in place.

Vacuum pump on.

Compressed air pump for moving two theta arm.

2 mm Hex driver for locking/unlocking the phi axis translation.
